Michael Sharkie and Matthew Campbell are tipping Robert Heathcote‘s speed machine Rothfire to take out the $1.5 million Group 1 sprint over 1200m in Perth on Saturday.
The Queensland trainer won the Winterbottom Stakes twice with his stable favourite Buffering in 2013 and 2015.
Rothfire, to be ridden by Damien Oliver, is rated a $4.80 favourite by Betr ahead of Elite Street and Vilana both at $6.
A dry track and a good barrier has Sharkie confident that Rothfire can produce his best form in the west.
“He‘s got a draw where he’ll be able to lob in that first four or five which I think really suits him. The one thing he doesn’t want though is to be hemmed in.”
“You‘ve got to let this horse flow into a race. You just want him out in a little bit of room from the 450m and if he’s there from that point with that sort of run, I think he’ll win.”
Sharkie has Rothfire on top from Beau Rossa and Sniparoochy, while Campbell selects Rothfire ahead of My Bella Mae and Elite Street.
Champion hoop Oliver is also shooting for his third Winterbottom, having won on Voodoo Lad in 2018 and Marasco in 2006.
Jamie Kah has flown across to Western Australia to ride James Cummings‘ sprinter Vilana in the Winterbottom, while Ben Melham also makes the trip to pilot another Godolphin runner in Paulele.
